Student Council Reelection Speeches

Reelection Speech for 04-05 school year

For the past three years it has been an honor and a privilege to serve my class as Student Council Representative. In these past years, I have always fought for the will of the students.

The biggest controversy this year occurred when a letter signed by the principal was sent to all minority students. The letter advertised a workshop that was open only to minority students. Many people complained to me about the workshops. They were upset that there was no workshop that was intended for the general population of white juniors, even though there was one for white underclassmen.

Acting on student response- I introduced a resolution that was passed unanimously by the council encouraging the administration to open up all of the workshops to all students. The resolution recognized that the intent of the workshops— to end racism at AB—was honorable but CREATING A SYSTEM OF SEGREGATED WORKSHOPS IS NOT THE WAY TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY.

And don’t forget- that last year- I introduced a resolution that stopped teachers from giving large amounts of homework and tests before math and science midyears. Before this policy change— many of us had to hand in English essays and take oral exams the day of midyears.

For next year, I plan on bringing about changes to gym. For athletes, it is ridiculous that students should have a gym class on the same day that they have a game or match. I will introduce a resolution to remedy this injustice.

I also have always wondered- Why do we have to make up gym classes?

When we’re sick and miss English- they don’t make us take two English classes the day we get back. It is time to change this.

I encourage everyone to come to me if they have other things that they want to be changed. This is gonna be our senior year— we oughta make it a good one.

Reelection Speech for 03-04 school year

For the past two years it has been my honor and privilege to serve this class as one of your student council representatives. In these years, through my role on student council- I have brought about positive change to the school.

Freshman year- I argued to secure the necessary funds for the recycling program- before the program, we were unnecessarily throwing away countless sheets of paper everyday.

This year, I devised a plan to stop teachers from giving homework and regular tests on midyear exam days and the day before. My plan was passed unanimously by the council. The administration, which has ultimate control over most areas of school policy, revised the plan to allow teachers to give 20 minutes of homework a night on the midyear exam days and the days before. Despite the revision- because of my efforts- next year, none of us will have tests on midyear exam days and our homework loads will be greatly reduced. And less homework is always a good thing.

From the suggestion of a fellow classmate, I also introduced a plan to create a silent room for students. It was also passed unanimously by the council and is currently pending administrative approval. Next year, because of construction, there will be no library, and therefore there won’t even be a relatively quiet environment. A quiet room would be a necessary improvement to our school.

When selecting five candidates in this crowded field- I hope you consider- my dedication to the council and the numerous improvements I have already made possible for the school and will continue to work on.

And please re-elect David Emer for student council representative.

Thank you very much.
